Russia denies role in current Ukraine protests

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Russia on Saturday denied any hand in ongoing demonstrations in Ukraine's eastern and southern regions which are both dominated by native Russians

This was outlined in a Russian Foreign Ministry statement which said that minister Sergei Lavrov had informed his US counterpart, State Secretary John Kerry of the denial

Kerry had expressed "anxiety" over talk of a Russian role in these demonstrations, but could not provide any evidence of the accusations, added the statement

Lavrov, for his part, expressed the view that the protests were due to the Kiev government's refusal to respond to the demands of the people of these regions

The demonstrations reached new heights on Saturday as rioters took control of several police stations and national security strongholds, along with a council building

This comes after the police chief in the eastern city of Donetsk was dismissed from his post by acting President Oleksandr Turchynov for refusing to carry out any action against the protests
