Movie Mania: The First Time (2012)

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) Shake a leg with kevin bacon and re-live some magical teenage moments

When senior dave hodgman (dylan o’brien) runs into the quirky intelligent aubrey miller (britt robertson) at a high-school party sparks fly leaving him unsure of his long-term crush on popular girl jane harmon (victoria justice) who considers him just a good friend.

This may sound like an oft-repeated premise in teen romances but what sets the first time apart is some clever touching and at times extremely funny dialogues. aubrey who is dating an older and somewhat morose guy ronny (james frecheville) gradually accepts her attraction to dave whose smirk is completely forgivable when he says ‘you dig me’.

Obstacles arise when they attempt to pursue a more intimate and meaningful relationship and to the filmmaker’s credit these scenes are dealt with in a realistic and tasteful manner. dylan o’brien (teen wolf) puts in a memorable performance as the thoughtful sensitive dave (every teenage girl’s dream no doubt); britt robertson is petite and pixie-ish an enviable quality that makes everything she does and says seem cute. even if you’re an adult this is one teen film you might just want to watch twice. the music’s quite catchy too especially silly boy by the blue van which features in the opening credits.

Triviaif you’re a fan of animated blockbuster frozen you might find this interesting:

Originally queen elsa (voiced by idina menzel) was intended to be the villain of the story. however when the character’s major song let it go was played for the producers they concluded that the song was not only very appealing but its themes of personal empowerment and self-acceptance were too positive for a villain to express. thus the story was rewritten to have elsa as an isolated innocent who is alarmed upon learning that her powers are inadvertently causing harm and struggles to control her powers with anna’s (kristen bell) help. Love connection

Maybe it’s too early to be fixing up the paparazzi-hating (or so he claims) coldplay frontman but we think the carefree boyfriend hopping taylor swift can bring some magic back into his life. ‘conscious uncoupling’ can dampen anyone’s spirits; who knows the love story hitmaker may just turn out to be the romantic and musical inspiration martin needs to put things into perspective. and if it doesn’t last we can never get enough of those break-up songs swift writes - a great accompaniment to housework and always popular in the karaoke department.

Still footloose

Thirty years ago a young and nimble-footed kevin bacon danced his way into our hearts in the brilliant footloose. here’s a clip of him recreating the magic on jimmy fallon’s late show which left us spellbound all over again. judging by the number of hits we guess over 12 million people felt the same way.

Just for laughs

Mole of the emirates

Overheard from conversations around dubai this week…

“i have an umbrella on standby.”

“talk summer to me.”

“when i said i’d bake a cake i was talking metaphorically.”

“it ain’t over till lady gaga sings. or pukes. or turns up in a meat dress.”
