(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) iro April 10 - Egyptian Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy met here today with the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton who is currently visiting Cairo. Egyptian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Said Bader Abdel Atti said the meeting dealt with the development of relations between the two sides and the prospects for cooperation in political economic commercial and financial areas adding that Ashton stressed the importance of relations with Egypt and the importance of the meetings held by Fahmy in Brussels particularly with members of the European Parliament which Left a good impression about the reality of the situation in Egypt. The spokesman explained that Fahmy touched on steps related to the implementation of the road map in the light of the upcoming presidential elections. He stated that the meeting dealt with the issue of water in the light of the Ethiopian Renaissance Dam project and the importance of dealing with this issue with the utmost degree of importance due to its sensitivity. Abdel Atti added that the meeting also discussed a number of regional and international issues of mutual concern particularly developments of the Palestinian issue in light of the Arab League emergency ministerial meeting held yesterday in the presence of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and the importance of the extension of negotiations in accordance with a time frame and the need for Israel to implement its obligations and respect the terms of reference of the peace process and the resolutions of the international legitimacy. The spokesman said Fahmy's talks with Ashton addressed the negotiations on the developments of Iran's nuclear programme as well as developments of the Syrian crisis and the critical importance of the delivery of humanitarian assistance regional and international efforts to stop the killings and the need to reach a political solution to the crisis. For her part Ashton stressed the crucial importance of seizing the current opportunity to reach a peace agreement between the Palestinian and Israeli sides
