Abbas Briefs Ashton on Peace Process Developments


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) iro April 10 - Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas met Thursday in Egypt with Catherine Ashton European Union high representative for foreign affairs and security policy who is currently on a visit to Cairo. During their meeting Abbas briefed Ashton on the latest developments of the peace process and efforts to revive it from the current impasse due to Israel's intransigence and refusal to stop settlement. He said settlement is the main obstacle to continuing serious and genuine negotiations in order to reach a lasting peace based on international legitimacy resolutions that affirm the right of Palestinian people to establish their independent state with Jerusalem as its capital on the basis of 1967 borders. Abbas added that Europe must play a bigger role in the peace process along with its distinguished role in supporting Palestine economically and assisting the Palestinian people with the establishment of the state's institutions
