(MENAFN- The Peninsula) An increase in the incidence of lifestyle diseases among young low-income workers in Qatar has been witnessed at an annual medical camp.
Prevalence of diabetes is high among workers, along with high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels and many are unaware of their health issues.
Some also suffer from allergy disorder, uric acid problems, mental stress and cardiovascular diseases, according to healthcare experts involved with the free camp organised by Indian Islamic Association Qatar (IIAQ), with Indian Doctors Club and Indian Medical Association (IMA)
The 13th camp will be on Friday at Tariq bin Ziyad Independent School in New Salata, with the support of Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) and Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC). It is sponsored by Ooredoo. It will coincide with World Health Day. The camp has been shown as a model by World Health Organisation, according to organisers. "It's (lifestyle diseases) very much on the rise. We find more and more young people with lifestyle disorders. This is a change we have seen," Dr Sameer Moopan, Vice-President, Indian Doctors Association and IMA-Qatar, said yesterday.
He was speaking on the sidelines of a press conference held to announce the 13th camp and a health awareness programme, at the Holiday Villa Hotel and Residence.
The camp diagnoses many new cases of diabetes and other lifestyle diseases, said Dr Moopan.
"Diabetics is very common among workers, at every camp we identify at least 15 to 20 people with high level of diabetics and they are unaware of their condition," said Dr Moopan.
However, he said the incidence of pre-symptoms of oral cancer has reduced in the recent years.
The 13th camp will be inaugurated by Sanjiv Arora, Indian Ambassador, with senior officials of PHCC, HMC, Ooredoo and other organisations.
The day-long event is expected to benefit over 1,850 pre-registered low-income workers from India, Nepal, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Volunteers have met workers who have health problems. More than 5,000 people are also expected to attend. Over 150 doctors and 175 para-medical staff will check blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol levels, oral cancer, eyes, conduct ultrasound and ECG tests, consultation and counselling.
General physicians, orthopaedics, cardiologists, dermatologists, ophthalmologists, ENT specialists and dentists will also be available.
Free medicines will be distributed for common diseases and those requiring further treatment will be referred to HMC. The camp will also support deserving patients to get health cards. It will hold awareness lectures on 'Annual medical check-up,' 'Lifestyle modification for a healthy heart,' 'Is cancer preventable diseases,' 'Cholesterol- related health disorders,' 'Make your home safe for kids,' 'Lifestyle modification for healthy heart,' 'Back pain, a modern day health problem,' and 'Early detection of breast cancer
