Al Shamal Crowned Qatargas League Champions


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) ha April 08 - Qatar Football Association (QFA) and Qatargas crowned Al Shamal as champions of the first edition of Qatargas League after leading the season with 44 points. Al Shahaniya came second following their resounding 7-0 win against Al Sadd. This goal-glut propelled their total to 35 points QFA said. Al Arabi finished third following their 6-1 win against Al Khor which advanced their total to 33 points. Second division clubs Al Shamal and Al Shahaniya now move up to Qatar Stars League and will compete as First Division clubs starting next season. Hundreds spectators comprising Al Shamal fans Qatargas employees and QFA officials watched the goal feast. Qatargas League which kicked off September 21 2013 concluded April 7 2014. Twelve local teams participated in the League organised by QFA at Qatargas' winter camp in Sealine. Congratulating champions Al Shamal QFA Vice President Saoud Al Mohannadi said "We laud the efforts of Al Shamal players on winning this key tournament as well as the second and third placed teams. "This season has been noteworthy for Second Division teams Al Shamal and Al Shahaniya who now move on to Qatar Stars League. This tournament illustrates QFA's objective to boost the development of First and Second Division teams. "We are very proud to have organised this league with Qatargas and look forward to working with them on future joint projects that develop growth of football across the country." Qatargas Chief Operating Officer-Administration Ghanim Al Kuwari congratulated the teams and wished them success in Qatar Stars League. He reiterated Qatargas' support to sports in general and football in particular. "We are hopeful that our partnership with the QFA through the Qatargas League will contribute to enhancing the development of football in Qatar. This is significant since Qatar is getting ready to host the World Cup in 2022. "Qatargas thanks and congratulates QFA for organizing a fantastic tournament. We thank them for providing us the opportunity to be part of it. We look forward to continuing our co-operation in the years to come that will ultimately benefit football and our emerging talents in this important game." QFA conducted the Qatargas League as per the standard league format where two teams from the Second Division qualify to Qatar Stars League (QSL) based on their ranking while 13th and 14th places teams in QSL are relegated from QSL to Qatargas League
