Japan Adds Two New Tsunami Observation Points


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) kyo April 08 - Japanese authorities have added two new tsunami observation points to the country's network for that purpose. The Meteorological Agency and the land ministry are reviewing the tsunami observation system Japan's (NHK World) reported. They have learned from the March 2011 disaster that hit northeastern Japan. The government bodies are installing devices that allow accurate measuring of tsunami that exceed 5 meters in height. They are also putting in place equipment that can observe tsunami offshore. One of the new points is located at the Misaki fishing port in Miura City Kanagawa Prefecture near Tokyo. At the Misaki port a new device has a sensor measuring water pressure. It can measure tsunami as high as 20 meters. A GPS device has been installed in waters 20 kilometers off Hyuga City Miyazaki Prefecture southwestern Japan. The number of observation points now totals 225 across Japan including 53 offshore. The Meteorological Agency said it is now able to issue tsunami warnings to coasts across Japan based on improved observational data. This includes areas where tsunami may arrive soon after a warning due to geographical features. The new observation points go into effect Tuesday.
