(MENAFN - Arab News) Riyadh is being transformed into a pedestrian-friendly city through a massive project that aims to construct sidewalks and walkways across the city's neighborhoods.
the municipality developed 100 km worth of sidewalks during the first phrase of the project.
the project was undertaken to meet demand for outlets for exercising and hiking.
more footpaths will be created in the near future according to a report issued by the municipality which will link footpaths to different parts of the city.

according to the report more than 40 walkways spanning 60 km have already been implemented throughout sub-municipalities. the agency responsible for reconstruction announced that new pedestrian sidewalks and walkways in 18 new locations spanning 47 km would be developed. in all more than 130 km worth of walkways will be created by the end of the project.
the report also states that local authorities aim to convert traditional road schemes into modern streets to enhance traffic safety and movement and accommodate for pedestrians without compromising environmental architectural or urban structure.
unused spaces may be converted into parking areas that can be used for commercial sites in coordination with the general directorate for investment development at the riyadh secretariat the riyadh traffic department and other authorities.
