Jones hails 'amazing shot' after maiden win

(MENAFN- Kora) Having reeled in overnight leader matt kuchar to force a play-off on sunday jones chipped in from 42 yards for birdie on the 18th - the first play-off hole.

The 33-year-old australian who first played on the pga tour in 2008 claimed afterwards that he had predicted he would sink the shot to win the event.

"yeah the shot was an amazing shot" jones said.

"i told it to a few people that i walked up there and told my caddy i was going to chip it in and from my angle it was hard to tell if it was going to go in or not.

"you don't know if it will lip out low or high but when i saw it disappear it was probably the happiest i have been on a golf course."

Jones started the final round at the golf club of houston six shots adrift of kuchar who was four strokes clear at the top of the leaderboard.

While kuchar could only manage an even-par fourth round in texas jones carded eight birdies including one on the 18th hole to ensure a play-off was required.

In a precursor of things to come jones birdied the last hole with a 48-foot putt while kuchar bogeyed the 16th and 18th to drop to 15 under overall alongside the australian.

"i actually didn't look at the scoreboard too much because i knew i had to make birdies and i was just out there playing golf" jones said about his fourth round.

"i actually told myself before i teed off this was just like playing a practice round... and to be aggressive and make as many birdies as you can and luckily i did that."

The victory earned jones a maiden berth at the masters which starts on thursday while it continued a strong run for australian golfers on the pga tour after steven bowditch broke through for his first victory at the texas open last week.

"the win and going to augusta is amazing. the win means everything to me right now because that is what we play for to win" jones said.

"to get to augusta and have augusta as a... reward for that win is amazing and i can't wait to get there and get some practice rounds in and hopefully play well and hopefully three aussies can win three in a row."
