Japan, US Agree to Put Up Defenses against N. Korea

(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Japan's Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera and US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel on Sunday agreed to step up their defense against threats from North Korea's "provocative" missile launches.

Hagel said the United States will deploy two Aegis-equipped ships to Japan by 2017, as the region is on guard against North Korea's nuclear and missile development programs, which Pyongyang has been advancing in defiance of international pressure, according to Japan's (Kyodo) News Agency.

The defense ministers agreed that they oppose China's unilateral action to change the status quo in the East China Sea, and Washington takes "seriously" the US-Japan security treaty to defend Japan
