S. Korea's New Nuclear Envoy Heads to US for Talks on N. Korea

(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) South Korea's new nuclear envoy left for the United States on Sunday for talks with his American and Japanese counterparts on how to deal with North Korea's latest nuclear threat, an official said. Hwang Joon-kook is scheduled to meet with Glyn Davies, Washington's special representative for North Korea policy, and his Japanese counterpart, Junichi Ihara, in Washington, D.C. on Monday, the foreign ministry official said.

Hwang also plans to hold a separate bilateral meeting with Davies and Ihara, according to the official. The trilateral session to be hosted by Davies is intended to "exchange views on a wide range of issues" related to North Korea, according to the U.S. State Department. The meeting comes days after Pyongyang threatened to carry out a "new form" of nuclear test in anger over a United Nations condemnation of its recent ballistic missile launches, South Korea's News(Yonhap) reported. North Korea conducted nuclear tests in 2006, 2009 and 2013, drawing international condemnation and U.N. sanctions.

North Korea recently test-fired two ballistic missiles into the sea off its east coast, a move Seoul and Washington say violated U.N. Security Council resolutions that ban all ballistic missile tests by the North. North Korea has described its missile launches as self-defensive military drills to counter what it claims is the U.S. hostile policy and its rehearsal of a nuclear war against the North. The trilateral meeting is a follow-up to summit talks held last month of the three leaders of South Korea, the U.S. and Japan held in The Hague on the sidelines of the Nuclear Security Summit
