Imran Khan defuses revolt in party's KPK chapter

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) Pakistan tehreek-e-insaf (pti) chairman imran khan has quelled in time simmering revolt in his party in the khyber pakhtunkhawa where it leads the ruling coalition by threatening to dissolve the provincial assembly

A group among party lawmakers who claimed support of 21 pti members in the assembly met imran at his residence with a long list of allegations against chief minister parvez khattak’s cabinet accusing some of its members of indulging in corruption. though they formed a “forward bloc” in the assembly asking the chief minister to seek fresh vote of confidence or step down the group reaffirmed allegiance to the pti and vowed to uphold its ideology.

The crisis in khyber-pakhtunkhwa reached a tipping point on friday when imran gave a stern warning that he would rather ask the chief minister to dissolve the assembly and order fresh election than submit to blackmail.

“it is their democratic right to differ and hold a meeting with the party’s chairman to convey any genuine concerns.” “but if someone thinks that he can blackmail me either he doesn’t know me or he is under some illusion” he added. “we will dissolve the assembly and call fresh elections” imran added.

The displeased legislators met the pti chief who assured them that their reservations would be addressed. he also held out an assurance that an inquiry would be launched against ‘corrupt ministers’ in the provincial cabinet irrespective of their party affiliations according to sources privy to the meeting.

Naeemul haq the office in-charge of the party chairman told reporters that the inquiry would be held within 15 days. one of the disgruntled mpas said that their future course of action depended on the outcome of the inquiry.

“i assure you that your grievances will be addressed. i was kept in the dark [on the political situation in k-p]. the central leadership will not interfere in provincial affairs” sources quoted imran as saying.

He also told them the portfolio of health ministry was given to shahram khan tarakai of the awami jamhoori ittihad pakistan (ajip) because the party was likely to merge into pti soon.

Earlier in the day 14 pti legislators including some former parliamentary secretaries handed their resignations to the deputy speaker. “we’ve not resigned per se. we’ve just handed our resignations to the deputy speaker” one of the disgruntled mpa javed naseem told journalists. he added that imtiaz shahid was also one of them.
