(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) Honey-voiced singer jeremih who played dubai?s new atelier m nightspot recently tells us about hanging with diddy and learning from 2 chainz

Chicago-born r&b star jeremih is most widely known for his us top five singles birthday s** (2009) and down on me with 50 cent (2010) which sold more than three million copies combined in his homeland.

The 26-year-old has released two albums to date under the def jam label as well as notching a string of collaborations with a who’s who of urban music including ludacris lil wayne wiz khalida drake and 2 chainz.

The singer born jeremih felton performed in dubai recently at the grand opening for atelier m restaurant lounge and rooftop. also entertaining guests on the night in dubai marina’s pier 7 building were his fellow american r&b hotshots lloyd and bobby v.

City times spoke to jeremih before his set.

You were mistaken for jason derulo recently. have you ever been mistaken for any other artists?

Man a lot of people say i look like a lot of artists that i don’t look anything like – from jason derulo to diddy to kanye. so yeah…

Who is thumpy johnson?

Umm thumpy johnson was going to be the name of my new album but things are subject to change now. i’ve made a lot of new incredible music and it feels like i’m a little bit worldlier.

Do you prefer collaborating with other artists on your songs or plowing ahead with your own musical vision?

I love collaborating. period. of course i love to put out my own music but working with other people – like j. cole lil wayne big sean – is something i always wanted to do. and working with people i used to listen to in high school of course i’d want to collaborate more!

Having risen to fame in your early 20s what in the past five years has really wowed you?

One time in the states i had a showcase with lionel richie. i was like ‘damn that was what my mother and father were listening to when they were growing up’. or just being in diddy’s crib and kicking it with him. a lot of surreal things have happened to me.

Is it true that 2 chainz and gucci mane taught you how to improvise in the studio?

They don’t know that but it’s true. that’s why i like collaborating with other people as i learn the way they work and record. when i was working with them i realised not to care and to go right in on records.

You recorded you’re mine for the soundtrack to tyler perry’s a madea christmas in december. what inspired the motown vibe of the song and its video?

I actually had a lot of fun shooting that. the record is a christmas song and has that feel to it. i wanted people to see another side of the artist jeremih and show how i felt as an avid student of that old school music.

What if any do you think is the magic formula for prolonged success in the music industry?

One time i heard r. kelly say “you will remain successful as long as you write about your life.” a lot of people talk about things they don’t have or don’t really do. i put my real life in my lyrics.

What are your thoughts on atelier m?

I love it so far. the vibe is nice the women are beautiful and the people there have been nothing but helpful. i’m just about to see how good the food is. it looks like it’s going to be turned up tonight and i can’t wait to be on stage. adam?khaleejtimes.com
