(MENAFN - Muscat Daily) Duqm is seeing its growth graph moving only upwards, and rapidly. In less than a decade the place has grown by leaps and bounds, offering good amenities and infrastructure, and attracting more people. Duqm, which till seven years ago had only 70 Omani families, now has over 3,000.

This speaks a lot about the development of the place. Duqm now has hospitals, roads, restaurants and a market. Five hotels with 800 rooms cater to tourists. Besides, green areas are being created for the betterment of environment.

''I have been here for the past seven years. Initially when we started with the Port of Duqm project there were no roads, no market and essentials were not available in close vicinity.

''There were only 70 families in Duqm back then. The scene is completely different now. And, in the coming three yeas it will be a place which people would want to visit over the weekend,'' said Reggy Vermeulen, commercial director at Port of Duqm.

''There was a time when driving from the hotel to the port would be an uphill task. There was no road, just dust and rocks. Communication facilities had not been developed. Now, we have 3G services available here and there are well laid out roads. Of course, there is scope for more, but I think we have come a long way in the past seven years,'' added Vermeulen.

Besides the nearly 3,000 Omani families, Duqm is also home to a 12,000-strong labour force, providing a cultural mlange.

Said Mohammed al Manji, a Duqm Port employee said, ''Some Omani families have  even taken to cuisines from other cultures.
