(MENAFN - Muscat Daily) Several Indian expatriates who took part in a seminar titled, Janapaksham (people's voice) on Thursday said the ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA) will find it difficult to return to power in this year's national elections.

The seminar organised by the Indian vernacular daily Madhyamam was held at Parkway Hotel in Ruwi.

Ranjit Nair, a participant, said that UPA will find the going tough in this year's national elections. ''During the last elections in 2009, UPA was able to put together a strong coalition front but this year it has failed to do so. This will affect its prospects,'' he said.

Aziz Vyanad, a supporter of the Welfare Party said that the people of India are looking for an alternative. ''The ruling coalition led by the Congress and the main opposition [the BJP] are fighting it hard. However, both of them have failed to implement pro-poor policies. So, voters are looking for an alternate alliance in this year's polls.''

Supporting the ruling coalition, N Oommen and PTA Rasheed said the Congress party has done a lot of good work for the country and the people will be happy to return it to power.

They also spoke on the necessity of keeping communal forces at bay.

Supporting the Communist Party of India (Marxists), CP Babu said that the ruling coalition is facing several graft charges and people will definitely show anger by not voting for it.

MAK Shajahan, resident editor of Gulf Madhyamam, and VM Faisal, convener, Gulf Madhyamam Readers' Club, were also present at the seminar.

Voting in the general elections begins on Monday.
