(MENAFN - Muscat Daily) It's not easy to come up on stage, face a packed hall and speak. Things may go wrong, palms may sweat, nervousness may take over and...you may just forget your lines. 


Something similar happened with Hijab Zehra, a senior category contestant of the Muscat Daily Listen Up's 25th and last semifinal at Bangladesh School Muscat on Thursday.


''That's why I hate memorising things,'' she said, smartly making up for the forgotten lines for her prepared speech on One Week Without the Internet. ''Though the Internet helps a lot but one can easily live without it. I have seen people who are happy even without it.''


The grade 12 student's impromptu speech was on An Experience with A Bully. Hijab said, ''People who bully must have once been bullied. You must speak out if you are being bullied. You should not stand and tolerate bullying.''


Her confidence made Hijab the winner from her category.


Syeda Sabrina Akther of grade five and Shaima Abdur Rahim of grade seven made it from the junior and middle categories respectively.


 


Syeda who spoke on My Dream Job in her prepared speech said that one's job should be like one's hobby. ''One should do the job that he or she enjoys the most.''


Her unprepared speech was on My Favourite Cartoon Character. ''I love Tom the cat from Tom & Jerry even if he ends up losing to Jerry the mouse in every episode.''


Shaima spoke on My Brother in the prepared speech segment. ''My brothers and sisters are very irritating but I still love them. They create a ruckus in the house but at the end of the day they are my brothers and sisters. It's they who take care of me when I am unwell.''


In the unprepared segment, she spoke on Things I Never Eat. ''I hate bananas and whenever I am in some trouble, my mother leaves no opportunity to say that this is because I do not eat bananas. I feel bananas are for monkeys only. I think after hearing this speech people who love bananas will start hating me.''


Between the prepared and unprepared speech segments, students entertained the audience with a musical performance.


Meenakshi Natan, a teacher of the school and a judge said, ''Unprepared speeches give a true picture about a speaker. Everyone can master the prepared speech category, so while selecting the best in the three categories I waited for their impromptu speeches. Speaking impromptu needs quick thinking, making a note of points to be included, giving it a logical flow, being confident, maintaining the right pace and pleasant voice.''


Nasreen Sulaiman, another judge said, ''For us, all 15 participants are winners. It's just that we had to choose only one winner from each category. Those selected were confident, delivered their speeches with clarity, made eye contact with the audience and had good content.''


The final will be held Al Bustan Palace, a Ritz-Carlton Hote
