Dubai Musings: In your Facebook

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) Are you guilty of oversharing online? here are the reasons why you need to be stopped

There are literally thousands of articles analysing the way people behave and misbehave on facebook so let’s just stick to the main issue: why do they do it?

In a selfie-obsessed world where oversharing has become something of a badge of honour have you ever asked yourself when it ever became appropriate to act like such a fool online?

It’s important to recognise that we’re all guilty of it in some form or the other. we leave ambiguous and emotional status updates privately stalk our exes and impose a deluge of cutesy baby (and pet) pictures on everyone unfortunate enough to be on our friend list. but when does this madness end?

I recently came across a computer application that helps you delete yourself from the internet and i’m not at all surprised by its popularity. of course we’re talking twitter linkedin youtube myspace (is that even still around?) flickr and dozens of other sites. but disappearing from the internet is no longer as simple as you might think. in a world where universities and potential employers regularly judge your merits and character based on your online presence ghosting yourself from the internet may have prospects questioning your absence.

So what’s the right type of you to project on the world? for starters be an adult and leave the angst for the teenagers. we don’t need to know every intimate detail about your personal relationships because when we see it come across our timeline we literally want to blind ourselves in shame.

We don’t need to know how successful you are either because posting pictures of your designer labels and fancy dining destinations just tells us how incredibly insecure you must be. we’re all judging you and you look somewhat pathetic.

We also don’t care for your political or religious opinions because we have our own and listening to your lectures about what’s right and wrong about society makes us want to prefer a cave to your friendship.

So what’s the right type of person to be online? why not start by personalising your public shout-outs via a private message because we just don’t care to be a part of conversations that have absolutely nothing to do with us. can’t stop yourself from chronicling every moment in your child’s life? why not stick to posting an update every birthday so we actually have a chance to see your kid’s developmental progression rather than be subjected to their every giggle and toilet triumph.

Are you posting too many pictures of yourself? stop - for the love of facebook just stop. if you want to be that person you don’t deserve the internet.
