NATO Freezes Russia Cooperation

(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) NATO is suspending all cooperation with Russia on civilian and military matters, the alliance's foreign ministers said Tuesday, raising also the possibility of deployments as part of their response to the Ukrainian crisis. NATO military experts will "put together a plan that could include the possible reinforcements and deployments of military assets" in the alliance's eastern countries, a source said on condition of anonymity, refusing to say what this could encompass. In a joint statement quoted by German press agency (DPA), the ministers pledged to continue providing "appropriate reinforcement and visible assurance of NATO's ... commitment to deterrence and collective defence against any threat of aggression to the alliance." "Our goal of a euro-Atlantic region whole, free and at peace has not changed, but has been fundamentally challenged by Russia," the ministers said in their statement. "An independent, sovereign and stable Ukraine ... is key to euro-Atlantic security." "(The crisis) calls into question the very principles upon which modern Europe is built-territorial integrity, international law, and the right of sovereign states to choose their own fate," Rasmussen noted
