(MENAFN - Muscat Daily) As many as 357 expatriates were arrested during raids conducted in Jaalan Bani Bu Ali in South Sharqiyah governorate for violating labour and residency laws. The raids were carried out on Tuesday by the Ministry of Manpower, represented by the Directorate General of Manpower in the governorate, in cooperation with the Police Command of South Sharqiyah.
Mudhafar bin Said al Wahaibi, director general of manpower in the governorate was quoted in the release as saying, ''MoM is keen to implement the provisions of the Labour Law and
Its implementing ministerial statutes and decisions. The raids were carried out by the directorate based on calls from citizens, and 357 Labour Law violators were arrested.
Among them 25 workers were without valid documents and 16 were absconders. The remaining 316 were found to be violating provisions of the Labour Law. Some of those arrested were working as scrap collectors, tailors and manufacturers of gypsum in residential areas.
Wahaibi said that many workers lived together in congested and crowded areas and this has a negative effect on the social and moral aspects of the workers as well as the community. The Directorate General has initiated procedures for deporting the arrested expatriates.
