(MENAFN - The Peninsula) Following recommendations from the Prime Minister and Supreme Education Council (SEC) Chairman H E Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani, an open forum was held by the Supreme Council of Education, bringing together diverse members of the Qatari educational community and different sectors of Qatari society. Under the theme of "Education between Reality, Challenges and Ambition", the community meeting was held at the Ritz-Carlton's Al Wosail Ballroom yesterday between 6pm and 9pm

The forum was attended by over 150 key stakeholders, led by H E Sheikha Hind bint Hamad Al Thani, Vice Chairperson of the Supreme Education Council, accompanied by a number of Ministers, deans of national colleges, representatives from the educational community, editors-in-chief of various newspapers, members of the Independent Schools Advisory Committee, and teachers representing a number of schools. Also attending the event were a number of members of independent schools' boards of trustees, parents of students attending independent and private schools and SEC Department Directors

H E Dr Mohammed Abdul Wahed Ali Al Hammadi, the Minister of Education and Higher Education and Secretary General of the Supreme Education Council, began the event by expressing gratitude to the Prime Minister for taking the initiative to convene this community meeting and to take on board public opinion through the SEC's online survey, which has polled over 1,300 respondents in less than a week.

According to Dr Al Hammadi, these initiatives "complement the communication process between the different parts of the educational process. These initiatives work in unison with our efforts in strengthening the bond between educational institutions and in working towards improving the education process as a whole"

Dr Al Hammadi said: "This week we have witnessed more than 12,000 teachers vote electronically for members of the Teacher Advisory Committee. This comes after the successful elections for the Advisory Committee of License Owners and the Boards of Trustees for Independent Schools.

Following opening remarks by Dr Al Hammadi, the Prime Minister and Chairman of the Supreme Education Council H E Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani said: "I have wanted to hold this meeting since the Emir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani entrusted me with leading the Supreme Education Council. I am fully aware that the Emir has entrusted me and the valued members of the Council with leading Qatar's human development, the real driver to a bright future.

The Prime Minister said: "This meeting provides us with an opportunity to listen to our different partners in the educational structure, to understand their concerns and to share their aspirations. I call on the Council to keep all communication channels open for all opinions and complaints and to undertake the necessary steps to address any concerns. These channels prove our commitment to the different sectors of our community.

Meanwhile, H E Sheikha Hind bint Hamad Al Thani stressed the importance of translating dialogue into practical and realistic steps that can be taken immediately by the Supreme Education Council and all concerned parties, including civil society organisations
