(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) The National Center for Statistics and Information (NCSI) has said that electricity consumption in the sultanate has seen a dramatic 149.5 per cent increase, with energy usage jumping from 8,402GWh in 2005 to 20,958.2GWh in 2012.
The study coincides with Earth Hour which is celebrated annually on the last Saturday of March.
Breaking down the power usage numbers between 2005 and 2012, the consumption of electricity has risen steadily over the seven-year study period, with total consumption in 2009 standing at 14,483GWh, rising to 16,133GWh in 2010, 18,512GWh in 2011, and reaching 20,958.2GWh in 2012.
Regarding the residential consumption of electricity, the energy usage increased from 4,759GWh in 2005 to 10,039GWh in 2012, representing an increase of 110.9 per cent. In 2009 the total consumption was 7,918GWh, 8,397GWh in 2010 increasing to 9,060GWh in 2011.
During the same period, the commercial consumption of electricity also rose by 191 per cent from 1,417GWh in 2005 to 4,124GWh. The consumption in 2009 was 2,870GWh increasing to 3,440GWh in 2010 to 3,784GWh in 2011.
According to the NCSI figures, the industrial consumption of electricity rose from 463GWh in 2005 to 3,436GWh in 2012, an increase of 642 per cent, which underlines the rapidly expanding industrial base in the sultanate. During the study period, the consumption in 2009 was 1,175GWh, 1,541GWh in 2010, and 2,583GWh in 2011.
Meanwhile, the government consumption of electricity increased by 76 per cent, as the total consumption in 2005 was 1,594GWh rising to 2804GWh in 2012. The consumption in 2009 was 2,095GWh, while in 2010 it was 2,287GWh, reaching 2,596GWh in 2011.
Consumption of electricity for other categories rose by 228 per cent, from 169GWh in 2005 to 555GWh in 2012. During the study period, the consumption was 424GWh in 2009, 468GWh in 2010, and 489GWh in 2011.
