A 23-year-old asian mother attempted to sell her six-month-old child for dh6000 in dubai. according to police officials on february 2 last year an undercover policeman posing as an interested buyer got in touch with the woman and struck a deal to buy her child for dh4000. the woman gave away her child in the parking lot of a shopping mall after giving her a last hug. she was arrested shortly after.

This is only one of the many cases of human trafficking recorded by the dubai police in the past few years. dr abdul al qoudos al abdaili assistant commander-in-chief for total quality and excellence affairs however said these are not organised crimes. “they are complicated cases but of a personal nature” he said.

The human trafficking cases recorded in dubai witnessed a remarkable drop in the year 2013 as compared to previous years he said. the dubai police registered 35 cases in 2010 24 in 2011 21 in 2012 while only 11 cases were registered in 2013. “this shows that the dubai police have achieved its goals to prevent human trafficking and to protect the community” he said.

In the aforementioned case the woman admitted that she had an affair with a pakistani man and her child was born out of wedlock. she said she delivered the baby in a flat in dubai with the help of another woman. the alleged father of the child left the country when the woman was only two months pregnant. the woman was sentenced to three years in jail to be followed by deportation.

The police said they gave a financial support of dh10335 to human trafficking victims and signed an agreement with al maktoum charity organisation to provide a further dh150000 to them.
