Omani woman director's 'Cholo' gets shortlisted for GFF short film category


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Cholo, a film by Omani woman director, Muzna al Musafir has been shortlisted for the seventh edition of the Gulf Film Festival (GFF) in Dubai in the short film category. The festival will be held from April 9-15.


''I was really happy when I was told that my film has been selected, Muzna said. I shot this film in Zanzibar because it is an exotic place and was a part of Oman.''


The film, funded by Imagenation Abu Dhabi and Injaz Dubai and produced by Stromboli Films in Paris, revolves around 11 year old Cholo (Nasir) who meets his stepbrother Abdullah, nine, for the first time when their father Said arrives in Muscat from Zanzibar.


 ''Since this was my first directorial venture I had to take care of everything myself like the crew, money, actors etc. It was an interesting experience. I learnt Swahili in Zanzibar and I visited schools there in search of Nasir. I have focused on the colours and culture in the place. I liked working with children there, said Muzna.


Her earlier film Niqab had featured in the Gulf Film Festival in 2010. ‘I have always been passionate about art. To be a director you need a vision. I have acted, done scriptwriting, produced and finally now I am directing. In Niqab I only supervised the project but in Cholo I have mostly done everything.''
