Six people killed, five others injured in Kashmir Gunfights


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) At least six persons, including three rebels, army personnel and two civilians, were killed during separate gunfights in Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said Friday



Police said three rebels, wearing combat uniforms, staged a gunfight in Kathua district of Kashmir on Friday morning when they stopped a private vehicle on a road and then opened indiscriminate fire, leaving one civilian dead and three others injured



"Later, the militants embarked in the same vehicle and appeared near the armys rocket regiment camp close to the international border with Pakistan," police said, adding, "Here they again opened indiscriminate fire using automatic weapons. One soldier was killed while others sustained injuries"



Police said while fleeing from the spot, rebels killed the driver of the same vehicle in which they have travelled to reach the camp



Following the attacks, Indian army accompanied by police and other forces chased the three militants and zeroed them in a forested area in the Kathua district



"The fierce exchange of fire which lasted for several hours left all the three militants dead," police said



Police said the area was still being searched by the troops to ensure that no militant is hiding in the forests



Kashmir is divided between India and Pakistan, both of which claim the region, but rule it in part. They have fought two of their three wars over Kashmir



According to human rights organization, the separatist gureillas have waged a war against the Indian rule since 1989 which has claimed lives of more than 70,000 people
