(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Sachin Dominic D'Silva from the Waljat College of Applied Sciences and Malikah Hamood Mohammed al Nasari from the Caledonian College of Engineering have won top spots in Nokia's first Discover Oman competition an app that can be downloaded on all Nokia Lumia mobiles.

The app provides a digital map of Oman and helps people discover the country. Twenty universities and over 500 students from Oman participated in the competition, in which they contribute data for the app.

The data include POIs (points of interests), new routes, photographs, stories and reviews of restaurants, roads, diversions, historical places and bridges.

The competition that ran for eight weeks, between October and December 2013 received over 2,300 contributions. D'Silva and Malikah were the top contributors. D'Silva contributed the highest number of images.

He submitted 700 pictures that were captured in eight weeks. Malikah was the largest contributor of new map data.

She contributed 400 places, 850 roads and added over 700km of new roads. Ten university students and five professional photographers from the Oman Photographic Society were also recognised for their contributions at the awards ceremony, which was hosted by Nokia Middle East at the Sifawy Boutique Hotel on Monday. The next phase of Discover Oman competition will begin in April.

''The mobile application was downloaded over 100 times during the first phase. We want Windows Phone users in Oman to download the app and make their contributions,'' Salma Massoud, head of app marketing, Nokia Middle East, said.
