Land Rover Oman supports Extreme Sailing Series off Muscat coast


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Land Rover Oman has been at the heart of world-class sailing action in the waters off Muscat, as the premium car brand hosted the award-winning Extreme Sailing Series as global series main partner.


The act, which saw 11 of the world's very best professional sailing teams racing ‘Stadium Style' in high-performance Extreme 40 catamarans, has been thrilling to watch for the thousands of public who have visited the Race Village at the Almouj Golf Club.


''It has been an absolute honour for Land Rover Oman to be hosting the Extreme Sailing Series at the second act of out of a total of eight on the global tour this year,'' commented Rob Preston, regional customer services director for Land Rover MENAP region.


''To see these world class teams racing with the stunning backdrop of Muscat is a sight to behold. We very much look forward to welcoming the series back next year and wish all the elite teams the very best of luck for the next act in Qingdao, China at the beginning of May.''


David Aziz, CEO-automotive, MHD, added, ''It was an amazing experience for us as well as our customers and members of the media who spared their time to go sailing on the Land Rover Extreme 40. We hope to make it a bigger event next year with additional Land Rover experiential activities.''


The final day of Extreme Sailing Series action provided a thrilling spectacle as the 11 teams raced round the course, just metres off the shoreline, at up to 30mph, thrilling the crowds gathered on the edge of the bay.


Heading into the final race of seven, on the final day, just four points separated the top four boats, with The Wave, Muscat, SAP Extreme Sailing Team, Alinghi and Emirates Team New Zealand all within grasp of the top spot on the podium.


But it was the local Omani team, The Wave, Muscat, who snatched the victory, dominating the final race and pushing Emirates Team New Zealand into second place and the Swiss team, Alinghi into third.


The Wave, Muscat skipper Leigh McMillan received the prize for first place from H E Sayyid Saud bin Hilal bin Hamad al Busaidi, Minister of State and Governor of Muscat, and flowers presented by Land Rover global ambassador, Hannah White.


Now in its seventh season, the Extreme Sailing Series is an award-winning and adrenaline-fueled global stadium racing series competed on Extreme 40 catamarans.


The circuit, which Land Rover signed as a series main partner in April 2013, puts the spectators into the heart of the battle and raises the bar in terms of both high level competition and sporting entertainment.


The Extreme 40 catamarans and Land Rovers are both designed with lightweight capabilities that make them dynamic and responsive, delivering world-class performance in their respective environments.


The circuit is one of only five global sailing events that are endorsed by the International Sailing Federation, including the America's Cup, the Volvo Ocean Race, the World Match Racing Tour and the PWA World T
