(MENAFN- The Peninsula) To ease congestions on the road and address future demand of growing traffic, the Public Works Authority (Ashghal) yesterday awarded three contracts for projects worth QR12.6bn for design and construction of Orbital Highway and Truck Route and Al Wakra Bypass Road.
The projects are expected to start in the second quarter of 2014 and completed by the second quarter of 2017
"New Orbital Highway and Truck Route is one of the largest projects being delivered through Ashghal's Expressway Programme linking Mesaieed to Al Khor and Ras Laffan Industrial City," Engineer Nasser bin Ali Al Mawlawi, President, Ashghal, told a press conference prior to signing the contracts with contractors. This project is considered a very vital addition to the roads network as it will form a free flowing traffic route connecting the northern and southern regions without the need to travel through Doha City.
"This will divert traffic outside the city, particularly trucks, and better manage the movement of heavy vehicles throughout the city providing greater journey choice," he added
The first contract of design and construction of Orbital Highway and Truck Route from Salwa Road to North Relief Road, was awarded to QDVC-Bin Omran JV. The project, valued at QR4.2bn, includes five lanes and two truck lanes in each direction with the provision of two future lanes
The second project from Mesaieed to Salwa Road will provide an orbital route of around five lanes and two separated truck lanes in each direction with the provision of two future lanes. Valued at QR6.2bn, the contract was awarded to Leighton Contracting Qatar-Al Jaber Engineering JV
The third contract is for design and construction of Al Wakra Bypass Road which will act as the main link between Al Shamal and Mesaieed. Valued at QR2.2bn, the contract was awarded to Larsen & Toubro
"The Orbital Highway Project and Truck Route will encompass design and construction of about 200km of dual carriageway, including 22 major intersections of bridges and tunnels," Al Mawlawi said.
"Major infrastructure improvements will be implemented as part of the project, including a storm water drainage network, treated sewage effluent networks, electrical and telecommunication networks, street lighting and substations.
Ashghal also announced that its Centre for Research and Development has been accredited with ISO/IEC 17025:2005 certificate by UK Accreditation Service
Meanwhile, to secure the supply of bitumen for its current and future projects, Ashghal signed a memorandum of understanding with Qatar Fuel (Woqod) to form a framework. Woqod will provide a structured framework for regular supply of bitumen from 2014 to 2019 for projects under Ashghal's mandate over the next five years
