Qatar Fuel (WOQOD) yesterday announced a QR65m investment in its bitumen storage and distribution in Mesaieed. WOQOD said the plan is to upgrade its bitumen storage, manufacturing and distribution facility located at Mesaieed Industrial City
Al Ijara Equipment, a subsidiary of Al Ijara Holding announced it signed a contract with Qatar Quarries and Building Material Company (QQBMCO) to transfer 2 million tonnes of Gabbro from the Mesaieed port to the site of the Ijara.
"We have been working very closely with the Public Works Authority (Ashghal) to understand Qatar's requirement of bitumen for the next seven years", Ibrahim Jaham Al Kuwari, General manager, WOQOD, said
"It's clear that there will be a huge increase in demand for bitumen, and with the signing of today's memorandum of understanding with Ashghal for increased supplies, WOQOD will be upgrading its bitumen facilities to ensure its reputation for providing timely and cost efficient supplies to Ashghal road contractors will be met in future", he added
WOQOD is the largest importer and distributor of bitumen in Qatar, using three dedicated bitumen ships operated by its subsidiary WOQOD Marine Services. Working closely with Ashghal and with technical support from Texas A&M University in Qatar, WOQOD also manufactures polymer-based bitumen using additives to improve road elasticity for high-use roads and heavy-truck roads
The Ministry of Development Planning and Statistics recently projected that the country's demand for the primary construction materials would reach a record peak during 2014-16 in its run up to the FIFA 2022 preparations. The highest projected demands are for limestone, Gabbro and spoil removal & disposal (SR&D)
The Authority noted that limestone is the category of material with the highest demand (during 2012-2022), 515 million tones, followed by Gabbro, 264 million tones. The SR&D demand is expected to reach 166million tones during the period
The Qatar Primary Materials Company (QPMC) recently signed an EPC contract with FLSmidth and Six Construct for the design and engineering of its Gabbro Terminal Expansion Project based in Mesaieeed.
The expansion project is expected to help import larger volumes of Gabbro and help reduce truck traffic into the Gabbro berths.
The project includes an integrated set of conveyors, dust suppression systems, sub-stations and stackers to streamline the imports of aggregate and its storage into Qatar
Khalid Al Rabban, QPMC Chairman, said with the completion of the project the discharge capacity of the Gabbro berth in Mesaieed would go up to 30 million tonnes per year from its existing discharge capacity of 20 million tonnes per year
