Tunisia and the United Nations Sign Framework Assistance Development Framework

(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Tunisia and the United Nations have signed the United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) for the period from 2015 to 2019, which has a budget of USD 121 million. Tunisian Foreign Minister Munji Hamdi signed the plan for Tunisia while representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Munir Thabit signed for the UN. In implementation of this framework the UN side will provide technical and financial support to Tunisia in the areas of democratic governance, especially through the support of the electoral process, and reforms in the areas of justice and transitional justice, security and information, as well as in the adoption of a new comprehensive and sustainable economic model for all categories. The assistance will also cover social protection and equality among citizens in access to quality social services. In remarks on the occasion the Tunisian Foreign Minister expressed his appreciation for the continuous support provided by the United Nations to Tunisia since the eruption of the revolution in Tunisia on 14 January 2011 in various areas of development, calling on the global body to support the efforts of the Tunisian government, especially in the advancement of the disadvantaged areas, reduce regional disparities, provide job opportunities and social protection, which would contribute to the achievement of the urgent aspirations of the Tunisian people. For his part, Thabit said the UN is keen to continue to support Tunisia in its transitional period, referring to the transitional strategy adopted since March 2011 to assist Tunisia in the areas of governance and the promotion of economic, social and disaster management and sustainable development. He explained that a premium of the budget allocated to this plan will be financed by United Nations agencies while the rest is to be mobilized by donor countries. The UNDAF is the strategic programme framework for the United Nations Country Team (UNCT). It describes the collective response of the UNCT to the priorities in the national development framework - priorities that may have been influenced by the UNCT's analytical contribution. Its high level expected results are called UNDAF outcomes. These show where the UNCT can bring its unique comparative advantages to bear in advocacy, capacity development, policy advise and programming for the achievement of MD/MDG related national priorities. While specialised agencies and non-resident agencies do not use the harmonised programme cycle of the UNDG Executive Committee agencies, this should not be an impediment to their full engagement in the UNDAF. Their expected programme or project activities, technical assistance and budget contributions should be linked, where they are part of the UN's comparative advantage, to the UNDAF results matrix.(QNA
