N. Korea launches 30 rockets into waters off its east coast

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) North Korea launched 30 short-range rockets into waters off its east coast early Saturday, the Seoul-based Yonhap News Agency reported, citing South Korean military.

North Korea fired three bursts of rockets between 4 am (1900 Friday GMT) and 6:10 am from a coastal area near Wonsan, according to the Joint Chiefs of Staff. It said the projectiles appeared to be FROG surface-to-surface rockets, noting that they are estimated to have flown around 60 km

The North did not impose flight or navigation bans over the waters where the rockets landed, the Joint Chiefs of Staff said.

The North has launched a barrage of short-range missiles and rockets into waters off its east coast in recent weeks in apparent protest at ongoing South Korea-US joint military drills, the report said

Pyongyang claimed that the joint drills were a rehearsal for invasion, while Seoul and Washington have said they are defensive in nature.

The Key Resolve command post exercises, the major joint drill, ended earlier in the month, while the Foal Eagle combat field training runs until April 18 and involves 7,500 American troops. About 28,500 US troops are stationed in South Korea to help deter North Korean aggression. South and North Korea remain technically in a state of war, as the Korean War ended in a ceasefire and not a peace treaty
