UN Security Council Imposes Sanctions on Illegal Libyan Oil Exports

(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) The UN Security Council on Wednesday condemned the illegal export of Libyan crude oil in a resolution that imposes sanctions on vessels carrying illicit oil shipments. The resolution, which aims to strengthen protections for Libya's oil reserves, comes after US forces on Monday took control of a North Korean tanker that had loaded crude oil at a terminal controlled by Libyan rebels. The Security Council resolution, which passed unanimously, authorizes UN member states to inspect any vessel suspected of carrying Libyan oil illegally, in coordination with Libya and the ship's flag state, dpa reported. The text also calls on countries to prohibit ships carrying illegal Libyan oil cargo from entering their ports and to return oil found on seized vessels to Libya. Morning Glory, a vessel flying a North Korean flag, was boarded by US special forces in international waters southeast of Cyprus Monday. The tanker had docked in the port city of Sidra as federalist rebels in Libya's east announced they would start exporting oil, ignoring threats by the governmen
