A global initiative that began in sydney, australia in 2007, the earth hour message has spread to more than 7,000 cities and towns, with its universal message of reducing energy consumption.

Across the world towards the end of march annually, earth hour encourages communities, people, households, businesses – basically, everyone – to switch lights off for one hour as a symbol of commitment to the planet.

In the city, earth hour is being celebrated by the dubai electricity and water authority (dewa) in partnership with the dubai supreme council of energy and emirates wildlife society (ews), which works in association with the world wide fund for nature (wwf). the celebration is supported by dubai properties group (dpg).

The dewa has encouraged all residents of dubai to participate in the celebrations which will be organised at bay avenue park from 5pm to 8.30pm on march 29, and also invited them to be part of the earth hour walk which starts at 8.30pm.

During earth hour 2013, the dewa achieved a reduction of 200,000 kwh of electricity and 120kg of carbon dioxide emissions.

Ida tillisch, acting director-general of emirates wildlife society in association with wwf, made a case for energy-efficient bulbs that may be more expensive but, as she said, “if we don’t take action now, we’ll be handing over a sick planet to our children”.

A campaign called ‘make the switch’ has been running in the last two weeks to increase awareness about electricity consumption.

Illustrating the many benefits of switching over to energy-efficient lighting, tillisch explained that if residents of a two-bedroom apartment in dubai change their regular — yes, cheaper — lights to the admittedly more expensive energy savers, that cut out 9,40,000 tonnes of co2 every year. no small figure, this is the same as removing 1,65,000 cars off shaikh zayed road every year.

What’s on offer

Khaleej times visited a few department stores in search of energy-efficient lights, and here’s a tip for our readers:

There is an offer on at carrefour that allows you to buy a pack of three energy-saving bulbs of osram for dh29. these are 23w bulbs that are as bright as 120w normal bulbs. each single piece of the bulb is priced at dh16. while it’s true that the regular, easily-fused, non-energy-saving screw type bulbs (at dh0.95 and dh1.25) come for a fraction of the price, by changing even half the bulbs in your house, you’ll see the difference in your bill, not to mention the peace of mind that you have done your bit for the environment.
