Israel Links Palestinian Prisoner Release to Talks Extension

(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Israel threatened Tuesday to hold off the release of 26 Palestinian prisoners if President Mahmoud Abbas does not agree to extend US-sponsored peace negotiations beyond an April 30 deadline. "In order to advance serious negotiations, we will all have to take decisions and to prove that we are interested in an agreement and real peace," said chief negotiator Tzipi Livni. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected a Palestinian condition to freeze settlement construction, and instead agreed to free 104 jailed Palestinian militants. He agreed to free them in four stages, depending on progress made in the talks. Three groups of 26 Palestinians were released in August, October and December respectively. A fourth group is scheduled to be freed on March 2
