Woman delivers baby boy inside SUV near Royal Opera House Muscat

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) It wasn't quite the birth New Zealander Clinton Genty-Nott had in mind for his child, when he was rushing his wife Rebecca, who was in labour, to Starcare Hospital in Seeb on Sunday.

While on their way, Rebecca, who was lying on the back seat of his SUV, suddenly screamed 'stop the car'. Genty-Nott pulled over at the nearest possible spot - a small corner next to the entrance of Royal Opera House at Shatti al Qurm. When he got out and rushed to her, he was in for a big surprise. ''My baby's head was already out,'' he said.

''It all happened so fast that I didn't even have time to panic,'' Genty-Nott, a 46 year old legal counsel with an investment company in Oman, told Muscat Daily. He immediately called up their midwife to assist Rebecca with her delivery. ''Fortunately, I had been coordinating with her via bluetooth [in the SUV] and we had planned to meet mid-way. I gave her the location and she said that she would be there soon, but continued giving me instructions just in case,'' he said.

Meanwhile, Genty-Nott star-ted making arrangements for his wife's imminent delivery. ''I have grown up on a farm, and have spent most part of my life delivering cows, sheep and mares. So when I saw this, I knew it wasn't anything different from what I had seen before,'' he said.

While keeping an eye on his wife and the baby, who was 'coming out too fast', Genty-Nott opened all the doors of his SUV, including the boot, to let some air in. ''But it would have been a sight if somebody had walked past our car. All I could do was cover the windscreen with the sun visor,'' he said after noticing some passers-by gape in shock.

When the midwife arrived, the baby boy was already 'neck out'. ''Three seconds later, the child was in her hands,'' Genty-Nott said. He wrapped the baby in an old towel that he found inside his golf bag, took five minutes to calm himself down, before heading to the hospital.

''Everything happened within just about 15 minutes... it was that fast. Fortunately, everything went fine. The baby came out, he was healthy, happy and making a lot of noise... except that my car was a mess. But it was all worth it.''

While the mother and son are out of the hospital, the couple is still amused at how the entire incident panned out. ''I had a water birth for my 16 month old daughter Elena in England, this one was just bizarre,'' Rebecca said.

''We were asked why we did not leave earlier (for the hospital). But we weren't expecting this to be so quick,'' said Genty-Nott. The couple has named their son Daniel, but Rebecca feels it should be 'Speedy Gonsa
