Japan Announces Steps to Punish Russia over Ukraine crisis


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Japan announced a set of measures Tuesday to punish Russia for intervening in Ukraine to support the independence of its Crimea region, including suspension of talks for easing visa issuance conditions.



The sanctions, which are in line with moves by the United States and European nations, also include freezing the planned launch of talks for an investment accord as well as for bilateral agreements on ensuring the peaceful use of space and preventing dangerous military activities, according to Japan's (Kyodo) News Agenc



But the relatively moderate steps could underpin the widespread view that Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is reluctant to bring Japan into a serious conflict with Russia as he has repeatedly met with the Russian President Vladimir Putin to address bilateral concerns, including a territorial row, while enhancing economic cooperatio
