Dubai Musings: Building bridges

(MENAFN-Khaleej Times) new friendships can crop up in the most unexpected ways

Building security are a constant presence in our lives; we should take some time to interact with them, says mohamad kadryLife is hectic, it often moves a million miles a minute and you’re left trying to ground yourself and catch your breath in the chaos. In this scenario, days are filled with forgettable conversations and passing pleasantries, but there are also constants that pull everything together and sometimes they come from the most unexpected sources. Thanks to rising rents and landlords unwilling to maintain tenancies, i’ve lived in a lot of different apartments during my time in dubai. that means loads of shifting, selling old belongings and setting up anew. but what’s always remained the same throughout all these changes of address has been my relationships with building security and the friendships that have formed around simple cups of tea.I guess i’ve been lucky to have had really competent and kind men and women working in the reception halls of all my residences. they have often gone beyond their duties to help out and always greet me with a welcoming smile. they are the workers we all pass by every day, and i make it a point to learn about their lives and journeys. But these conversations i share with them turn out to be more than just family histories and dreams for the future, they also tend to be amazing educational gateways. That’s because most of my holiday trips in the past few years have been inspired by the travels and hometowns of my building security, from kathmandu and delhi to damascus and cairo. they pass along local knowledge and recommendations, tips and advice, making for truly unique itineraries. during my stay in nepal i even had the chance to meet the family of one particular building security guard, and sharing that connection with them made for a priceless experience. There’s a lot to be learned from the people we encounter on a daily basis, the key is to have an open mind. curiosity and sincerity are powerful tools when meeting people, and you never know where one simple conversation might take you one day.
