Johnson defends Hogg over red card

(MENAFN- Kora) With Scotland already trailing 10-3 in the 20th minute, the full-back led with his shoulder into the jaw of Wales' Dan Biggar as the fly-half kicked the ball out of hand

Referee Jerome Garces originally showed Hogg a yellow card, but after watching replays on the big screen at the Millennium Stadium, he caught up with Hogg as he left the field and issued a red

That left the visitors a man light for the best part of an hour, and Wales brutally exploited the advantage, running in a further six tries to record their biggest win over their opponents

After the game Johnson, who is now due to take over as director of rugby while Vern Cotter assumes the role of head coach, insisted that the dismissal was not in Hogg's usual nature

"Stuart might be many things, and one of them is a great character, but he certainly isn't a dirty player, that's for sure," Johnson said

"He's already been in to apologise to Dan Biggar and the referee. It's so totally out of character for him

"He's really down about it. He's taking it tough

"He's an emotional lad and that emotion is a good thing, and in this case he is feeling he has let the boys down

"He's got to face reality that he has been caught doing something, he's got a proper tribunal to front and show his case. So he's in a dark place but that's just life. He has got to confront it.
