Obama, Abbas to review progress in Israeli-Palestinian talks

(MENAFN - Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) President Barack Obama will welcome Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas to the White House on Monday, and Obama looks forward to reviewing with Abbas Israeli-Palestinian negotiations progress, White House press secretary Jay Carney said

"They will also discuss our continuing effort to work cooperatively to strengthen the institutions that can support the establishment of a Palestinian state," Carney said during a briefing Friday. "That is something that we and many others have worked with President Abbas and the Palestinian Authority in doing." As he did during his recent White House meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Obama will commend Abbas "on the tough decisions that each leader has made thus far in an effort to move the process forward," Carney said

"He will speak of the need to establish a framework for negotiations going forward and the need -- as that takes place -- for additional tough decisions to be taken so that we can see a resolution to a conflict that has been going on for a long, long time, and that results in two states, a sovereign Palestinian state and a secure, democratic, Jewish state of Israel," Carney said

"We hope that we will see progress," he added. "This has been a very difficult issue for a long, long time. "It is one that Secretary (of State John) Kerry and President Obama have engaged in directly. We are doing everything we can as a partner to both Israelis and Palestinians in trying to help them move forward in this difficult process."
