Kuwait- Meet To Discuss Electronic Passport Issuance Project


(MENAFN- Arab Times) The Director General of Citizenship and Passports Department Brigadier Sheikh Mazen Al-Jarrah and the Assistant Director General of General Immigration Department Brigadier Talal Marafi will soon attend a meeting in Brussels with the Security Committee of the European Union Commission



The meeting is intended for discussing the preparations of Kuwait and Ministry of Interior to implement the project of electronic passport issuance and installation of Computerized Readers at ports, which is one of the conditions stipulated by the European Union to exempt Kuwaiti citizens from obtaining Schengen visas for travelling to Europe, reports Al-Rai daily



According to informed sources, Ministry of Interior is in the process of floating a tender for the project of meeting the conditions stipulated by the EU. They revealed that one of the conditions is the issuance of e-passport and a microchip containing the data of the traveler. They explained that the replacement of normal passports with electronic ones will be optional for citizens at the initial stage but it will become mandatory for all citizens eventually, adding that the ministry intends to start the process from June, which will continue for a year. Sources insisted that this process will prevent any fraudulent acts and will be a secure reference in case of any accidents
