(MENAFN -Arab News) a total of 110 runners, including 42 solo entrants and the remainder in relay teams, lined up at the start of the riyadh marathon last friday, an annual event organized by riyadh road runners and exclusively sponsored this year by subway with funds being raised in support of sanad children's cancer charity

Hosted by dirab golf & country club, this gruelling 42.2km challenge began at 7 a.m. with long standing club member margo benning being asked to start the race officially in honor of it being her final appearance before leaving the kingdom

Enjoying a cool and clear morning the competitors set off on a 4 lap course with solo runner pascal pichon and the maltese geordies husband-and-wife relay team taking early leads which they were able to maintain for the full distance with the winning team finishing comfortably under 3 hours and pichon appearing at the finish line a few minutes later

In the men's race second place finisher pospisil firmly held position leaving the excitement further back the field in a contest for 3rd place with berthiaux, cusack, delbecq and paredes running in a close pack for the initial 7km. keeping even splits throughout, berthiaux drew upon superior stamina to outrun his rivals as they began to fade under the effects of the heat

The women's race was more closely contested with kick, roghi and queck battling neck and neck until the half marathon mark. queck lost the leader's pace in the third lap but not until the final lap did kick pull away from roghi to finish 3 minutes ahead

By the end of the morning 23 teams and 31 individual participants had completed the course with the last team coming in just over 6 hours, all earning medals for commendable performance regardless of age or ability. the event was concluded with a lunch and awarding ceremony with trophies presented by club chairman christopher nixon
