(MENAFN -Arab News) after an almost 8 months wait since the last tournament basketball-batty filipinos in the industrial city got to enjoy its favorite pastime once again with the grand opening on friday last week of the 1st modon-perfetto basketball tournament presented by industrial sports association and supported by industrial city dawa office (icdo) at modon sports complex court in phase 2 industrial city on the outskirts of jeddah

The opening program started with a colorful parade of 39 teams followed by the welcome remarks of modon (saudi industrial property authority) manager amer saeed bamoneef. consul uriel norman garibay of the philippine consulate general in jeddah was the chief guest.

Defending champion pepsi-sipco in inter-commercial open rated division started its title-retention bid on the wrong foot after dropping a 69-68 decision against the taller and bigger jeddah united squad of hassan zenoudine.

It was a thrilling game with good defense from both teams. adjudged best player of the game was no.12 ramzi who also scored 17 points while tom basa had 16 points and mursie akad 15 points for pepsi team.

In the second game, butler defeated another strong team and defending champion in inter-company division group c napico, which was spearheaded by former jeddah selection player abril mabarit with big 31 points but fell short due to strong defense of butler. the final score was 81-72.

Named best player of the game was de la paz, who scored 35 points. other top scorers for butler were dela guerra 16 points and apostol 14 points, while napico had ranama on 18 points, baloloy 13 and lorenzo 4 points.

In the third and last game, j.juice of team manager lemuel brazil beat the perfetto of coach jess dicen 76-64.

Adjudged best player of the game was manalili, who tallied 23 points with zambrona 16 and pagtalunan and romero 8 points each. for perfetto jay liam compiled 21 points, william christopher boyce 13 and versoza 9 points

All team mascots at the parade were given trophies to the delight of their parents.

Other special guests who attended the launch of the tournament were icdo islamic center manager mansour, abo ali attah, saad bawashkah, perfetto manager ramli h. saleh, muslim world league international association manager osama azzouni, mohammad bayoumi, isa consultant, friend of the filipino community and recipient of the prestigious presidential banaag award, filsama's teng laquialam and gary santos and jimmy abdullah beltran, one of the pillars in the filipino basketball community and executive director of jso (jameel sports organization). the event was hosted by goody viagedor
