EU Increases its Humanitarian Assistance to Iraq


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) The EU Wednesday announced an increase in its humanitarian assistance to Iraq by three million euro in response to the increasing number of the internally displaced persons (IDPs) due to violence in Al-Anbar province.



This additional funding will bring the total 2014 humanitarian funding for Iraq to seven million euro, said Kristalina Georgieva, the European Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Respons



"The Iraqi civilian population is once again a victim of violence and insecurit



This new outbreak of armed violence is causing massive displacement of vulnerable civilians with more than 300 000 people on the move, " she said in press release, quoted by the kuwaiti news agency KUN



"The conditions for those who have fled are tough and for those who remain trapped in the cities of Ramadi and Fallujah delivery of aid is extremely difficult," she note



The statement noted that the EU is supporting Iraq in three different humanitarian challenges it is facing: the arrival of more than 224 000 refugees from Syria, people recently displaced in the wake of internal conflicts and Iraqi refugees in neighbouring countrie



Since 2003, hundreds of thousands of Iraqis have crossed into neighbouring countries fleeing the violence at hom



In early 2014, tens of thousands of vulnerable Iraqis are still living in dire condition
