Work to make Khor Taqah Oman's new hotspot nears completion

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Salalah will soon get another tourist landmark as the Ministry of Regional Municipalities and Water Resources (MRMWR) is in the final stage of completing a tourism project at Khor Taqah.

The project, currently in its sixth and final phase, involves beautifying and adding facilities to the site like a watchtower, a waterfront restaurant with outdoor and indoor seating, pedestrian walkways and parking facilities.

Khor Taqah was designated as a reserve in 1997 and is located west of the wilayat of Taqah, about 30km west of Salalah.

This khor, with a large deep freshwater body fed by a spring, has a permanent connection to the sea. The khor has a high diversity of bird and fish life, with about 20 species of fish and nearly 200 kinds of birds present during different times of the year.

The ministry, in a statement, said that the project is now in its final phase which includes establishing and installing water fountains and a fence to protect the creek. ''The works have been planned to end soon and open the site to visitors this year,'' said an official. The ministry said that creeks or khors have significant environmental and tourism value as diverse species make it their home and tourists are attracted to its natural beauty.

The official added that the project also aims at keeping the creek clean and avoid exposing residents of nearby areas to health risks from stagnant waters.

Earlier phases of the project included cleaning waste from the creek, levelling the area, flanking the sides of the creek with boulders, fencing its northern side, erecting two gates of reinforced concrete for entry and exit, building a tower for sightseeing, making internal and external parking, and pedestrian walkways.
