New radio frequency identification tags must for trucks

DP World-UAE region seeks 100 per cent compliance on its ‘truck monitoring system’ by June 30 as it directed all cargo and logistics firms to install new radio frequency identification (RFID) tags on their trucks entering Jebel Ali Port.

In a circular, the port operator said new RFID tags need to be installed in addition to the existing RFID tags in order to further streamline the truck monitoring system. It further said all new trucks will require both the existing and the new RFID tags.

“Effective July 1, 2014, trucks without the compliant RFID tags will not be allowed to enter Jebel Ali Port. The move is in line with DP World’s commitment to continuously improve processes by introducing state of art technologies in the port operations,” according to the circular.

The new RFID tags will be implemented on all external trucks and will be issued to all shipping lines, agents, hauliers, traders and port users. The tags will be supplied and installed by DP World on-site at the Customer Care parking near Gate No. 3 at a nominal cost of Dh70 per tag.

The port operator further said new system will enable safe and smooth flow of trucks in the terminal yards optimising container delivery and the receipt process; therefore, enhancing terminal performance and truck turnaround time.

DP World’s comprehensive safe driving programme for the thousands of external truck drivers using its flagship Jebel Ali port recently won the Dubai Awards for Sustainable Transport (Dast) for a third successive year.

Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, chairman, DP World, said: “Safety at all our ports and marine terminals is a top priority, not just for our own people but also for all those who must come onto our facilities as part of their job. This award is confirmation of the UAE region’s strong focus on safety and deep commitment to safety programmes for all port users.”
