Oman's education ministry records 310 violations in diploma exams

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Five cases of assault, three instances of fielding dummy candidates, 44 cases of abuse directed at invigilators were among the 310 violations reported during the first semester General Diploma exams for the 2013-14 academic year.

In a release, the Ministry of Education (MoE) stated that the violations by students ranged from assault, cheating, disruption, to use of mobile phones for cheating. As part of the ministry's efforts to regulate examinations, a special Truth Commission was formed under the chairmanship of MoE's Undersecretary for Educational Planning and Human Resources Development to probe instances of cheating in these exams, it said.

The biggest violation was use of mobile phones to cheat, followed by assault launched on monitors and heads of exam centres. After looking into the cases, the committee proposed debarring 251 violators from the results of one subject, in line with Ministerial Decision 3/2014.

Forty three violators will have their results of all subjects cancelled and will be barred from taking exams for two years.

Twenty five other students have been referred to the Public Prosecution for impersonation, assault, use of mobile phones and abuse. Seven violations were committed by faculty members at exam centres, including a monitor who send his son answers using a mobile phone.
