MoHC holds exhibition on Oman's heritage in Sur

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) An exhibition by the Ministry of Heritage and Culture (MoHC) opened in Sur on Monday.

Part of a heritage programme, the exhibition, inaugurated by Sheikh Abdullah bin Mustahil Shamas, governor of South Sharqiyah, has on display items discovered during archaeological excavations in Qalhat, Ras al Jinz and Ras al Hadd.

It also explains rehabilitation and restoration processes at the archaeological site of Qalhat. The exhibition also has a corner displaying photographs and models of important historical manuscripts. A symposium, held as part of the event on Monday, screened a documentary on historical manuscripts and demonstrated the process of manuscript restoration. It also screened a documentary on coins.

The symposium also saw the presentation of three papers. The first discussed manuscripts while the second and third talked about monumental landmarks in Sur and archaeological excavations and restoration in Qalhat respectively.

Excavations have proved that Qalhat, an important port for Islamic trade, was completely damaged in a 1508 earthquake.

The first paper also recommended teaching about manuscripts to students of higher education. MoHC has already organised exhibitions at Khasab and Dibba. The heritage programme aims to raise awareness on Oman's culture and promote tourism.
