Traffic violators will soon be able to pay their fines on the spot through credit cards as 100 e-devices have been distributed to police patrols by the General Department of Traffic of the Dubai Police.
The e-devices can also read the registration number of a car and police can know immediately if the vehicle is stolen or not, besides taking stills and videos that will enable the police to keep all records. The device can also be used to read the Salik tag and record all details of the car owner.
The number will be doubled to reach 200 devices, said Colonel Saif Muhair Al Mazroui, Director of General Department of Traffic. He said that the devices were the most modern and latest ones used at the GCC level.
Col Al Mazroui said e-devices are directly linked to the criminal and traffic system. “While entering the information, all data will appear automatically on the screen and will show even for criminal or traffic issues in all emirates,” he said.
“It will also show if the car registration has expired or has accumulated traffic fines. Also when a traffic law is violated the person will be alerted on the spot about the type of violation,” he added.
Describing his experience, Col Al Mazroui said they tried out the traffic violations e-device for issuing a fine while on Oman road. He said he was standing besides a car that registered a traffic violation when the driver came and said that he had just been alerted through an SMS that he had committed a violation.
The official said that the device batteries work for eight hours.
“In the second phase, the police will activate and operate payment of fines whereby the driver can pay it on the spot using credit cards.” He added that any person fined can ask the police official about his traffic violations.
The police can also use the device to send reports of accidents, type of accident and the driver who caused it. The driver will also be alerted and will be asked to contact the insurance company which can print traffic report on the spot by pressing a button. He said that the use of e-devices has reduced use of papers by 50 per cent and added that within six months, the use of papers would be stopped.
