But Johnson urged his team to start using their size as they look for their second win of the Six Nations
"We are a big pack of forwards," he said
"We are not the wee Scottish boys. We are a big pack and we've got to start playing big.
France sit fourth in an even table, which sees them level on points with the top three of Ireland, England and Wales
Johnson said his team, who edged Italy 21-20 in their last outing, needed to lift if they were to deny the French
"They are a very good rugby nation," said Johnson
"We know we have to lift our game to beat them
"The set-piece plays an integral role in the success of our team and so does the tackle area, and our defence has to hold
"If we do that right, we're in the contest. This is a contest that will go to the wire.
Johnson has been forced into a change for the clash with Moray Low replacing Al Dickinson (calf) on the bench
During training on Friday, Scotland were watched on by members of the 1984 Grand Slam side that completed the sweep with a win over France
Johnson said the veterans would inspire his team
"It's nice having people around who have walked the walk," he said
"We look for models and inspiration in all forms of people and when you chat to them they have -stories to tell and if you can't get a kick out of that there is something wrong with you
"These people have done great things and it is a privilege to sit down and have a chat with them in a setting such as this. It is pretty special. It is a good buoyant thing for the team.
