(MENAFN -Arab News) After several years (1997, ?Life is beautiful?) an Italian movie has just won the Academy Award (Oscar) as the best foreign film. The plot is not complicated but it evokes deep feelings that suggest a couple of reflections

A sixty-five years old writer stopped writing after having a novel published twenty years earlier. Although he leads a comfortable life, he is not satisfied with it and starts a search of ?The Great Beauty? that will make him able to write another book.

He needs to find a new source of inspiration in order to express his artistic skill a second time. But he soon realizes that such great beauty is difficult, actually impossible to find.

Walking around Rome, a city which ? due to its multi-faceted life, rich history, cosmopolitan personality ? should provide plenty of cues to a writer. But it cannot. The only beauty he finds is in the Roman palaces, in the baroque opulence of some churches and, maybe, in the memory of a long-lost love. Although authentic beauty is eternal, it is also ethereal and elusive. It can be admired and deeply experienced while he walks on the river banks at dawn, but it does not last long. It disappears like mist in the sun. After such disappointment, he can only go back to the useless, ostentatious society-life made of parties where everybody pretends to have a good time.

At first sight, it seems that this kind of existence does not bother his spirit. He appears totally adapted to such rhythm and style. But the truth is totally different. In reality he is deeply dissatisfied, he does not find any fulfillment in this joyously fake show of merriment. It is his birthday, he is young no more and a kind of alarm goes off. He becomes aware of what is actually happening in the deepest part of his own ?self?

The plot of the movie ?The Great Beauty? seems a parable of life. Since they become mature enough to think and are able to have goals and make plans, human beings start on a search of what they wish to achieve. Each wants to find the object of his (or her) dreams.

For the movie character such object is beauty, for another it could be love, spiritual fulfillment, inner peace, material satisfaction, art, fitness?. The problem arises when the individual realizes that, no matter how much he strives, his goal is never fully achieved. At a certain point, he may believe he found it. When he realizes that he hasn?t, he sometimes settles for a plan B goal, compelling himself to believe that it can be an acceptable substitute in order to fill the empty space in his soul. But it doesn?t. The tragedy of the human condition is exactly this: The impossibility of finding true, lasting fulfillment. The few who succeed in discovering it in the deepest spot of their hearts, reach the conclusion that fulfillment can only be spiritual. It can never be provided by outside situations, things or people. Everything is ?inside? and deserves to be detected, nursed and nurtured through a clear view and a good understanding of what ?being human? means

As the protagonist of the Oscar-winning film wanders around an empty city looking for possible, achievable eternal beauty, so do we. We may not be looking for ?beauty? specifically, but each of us has a secret dream in their heart. It is a dream, sometimes sadly unconscious (buried in the lowest layer of one?s spirit) that keeps us alive, that pushes us to go on, move forward, never stop, never give up.

It is commonly said that life is a journey and it is, indeed. Day after day, every man and woman on the planet wakes up in the morning and starts striving toward ?something?. Some know what this ?something? is, others ignore it. Here lies the difference between those who are ?aware? and those who are not. Is such difference important as to the way people experience life? I believe it is. The ?unaware? person moves because he (or she) cannot do otherwise. Getting through every single day is a rule no one can avoid, even when one does not know what he is aiming at. He does not even know if an ?aim? actually exists.

On the other hand, the ?aware? person (like the writer in the movie) has a precise goal, consciously goes toward it but ? in most cases ? he must admit that it is unreachable. Should we be disappointed by such a discovery? Probably not. Another wise saying tells us that the ?journey? is more important than the actual ?arrival? point. Let us believe it
