US destroyer sails to Black Sea

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The US destroyer USS Truxton is sailing toward the Black Sea via Turkish sea waters, local media reported on Friday

Turkish authorities confirmed a permission was given to the US navy warship to pass through the Bosphorus Straights, the sole entrance to the Black Sea, it was reported in the Hurriyet Daily News

Turkish coast gunboats escorted the US destroyer as it sailed through the Turkish sea waters

The US Navy said in a statement the USS Truxton left Greece on Thursday on the way to the Black Sea and was going to conduct training with the Romanian and Bulgarian navy. While in the Black Sea, the ship will conduct a port visit and routine, previously planned exercises with allies and partners in the region, it added

The ship has a crew of about 300 and is part of an aircraft carrier strike group that left the US in mid-February. On Wednesday, Washington said US fighter jets would join NATO patrols on missions in the Baltic countries, namely Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia

These American military movements have coincided with strongly-worded rhetoric on part of the US officials against Russia's intervention in regional countries, namely Ukraine.
